There are largely two types of people within the site - those who prefer a more combative approach, and those who enjoy primarily fostering and developing roleplay experiences. The Medical Department generally advocates the latter, as do I.
Being central to physical and mental health issues, medical staff are critical to facility operations and have significant engagement with a variety of people, assisting to resolve minor or complex issues. This enables opportunities to make a real impact on people’s experiences and as a consultant, that is only amplified.
Ignoring the above, medical consultancy is a great area to pursue, regardless of the specifics of the potential roleplay. The department has a high demand of service. This means there is always work to be done, considerations to be made, policy to be reviewed, and staff to support.
Regarding staff, training is essential to effectively fulfilling departmental responsibilities. There are large amounts of trainees and aspiring combat medics as well as ever increasing numbers of substantive staff that require support. This demand means as a consultant, I would always be able to offer guidance, and development, something that I encourage, believe I am good at, and thoroughly enjoy. This point is primarily supported by my historical experience as an executive researcher as the responsibility of staff support was by far, the most rewarding aspect of the role.
The reasons above when compiled represent my aspiration for this position. They reflect why I enjoy serving in the department and want to progress to a more senior position.
What makes you suitable for Medical Consultant?:
My personality and experiences, in-game and in real life align with what I believe being a medical consultant requires. In my real life, I am an emergency call handler and am regularly in intense and demanding situations that require me to be calm, responsive, and decisive. I support real people experiencing real trauma and gives me a good understanding to be reasonably realistic in my approach, of course considering that this is not real at the end of the day and everyone is trying to have fun.
Around two years ago, I was an Executive Researcher, I enjoyed connecting with people and fostering a friendly atmosphere and received positive feedback about my work. I made others feel comfortable and was always approachable due to my effort to foster a positive environment within the research department. It also gave me a chance to understand what it means to be junior clearance 4 and can act as a platform for me to continue building on the skills required.
I strive to go above and beyond, seeking opportunities for growth and improvement in every aspect of what I do. I have a genuine passion for creating memorable and immersive experiences and believe in pushing the boundaries and exploring new ideas for the sake of improvement.
The time I have spent on Garry’s Mod is just short of 8000 hours, I have held many positions of responsibility across servers, being medical director, police lieutenant, general of an army, and even a server owner. I understand what it takes to manage a group of people and department as well as the challenges faces from all levels of seniority. I have always enjoyed the ups and downs and have learnt from my experiences; I intend to use that for the benefit of the medical department.
Please explain an in-game medical procedure of your choice:
Curing an Illness
There are a few common illnesses that are transmitted within the site. They develop into symptoms that are identified by the patient, some of these include coughing, sneezing, swollen limbs, headaches etc. which should only be treated by medical staff through prescribed medication.
Step 1 - Identification
The patient will most likely come to the Medical Bay stating they are ill. Ideally, questioning will be conducted by the staff member to identify the symptoms or reasoning as to why the patient believes they are ill. If it is concluded they are likely suffering from an ailment, they should be taken to the scanning bed within the Medical Bay, or alternatively, a more experienced staff member may use an infection scanner. The patient will be scanned for positive confirmation on what they are suffering with.
Step 2 - Treatment
Once the ailment is known, the staff member should identify the required medicine using their own knowledge or the signage within the pharmacy. At this point, the patient should be put somewhere comfortable to allow the treating staff to acquire the medication from the pharmacy (or use their own) and prepare a dosage of 50ml within a vial. The should be delivered through an injection or orally depending on the patient's needs.
Step 3 - Follow-up
After the procedure, the treatment should be reviewed to ensure its success. This is not obligatory but is good practice. It can be done via an observation period, of be repeating step 1.
Once it is confirmed the patient is healthy, they can be offered suitable advice regarding future prevention if applicable. This could include ensuring they regularly take vitamins, maintain better hygiene, receive a relevant shot, or saltwater rinses. All of this is of course dependant on the illness and the patient's receptiveness to the advice.
What are the responsibilities of the Medical Consultant in RP?:
The underlying responsibilities for a medical consultant are the same as any other staff member, to protect and safeguard life, as well as care of the physical and mental wellbeing of people through medical means. They do not forgo their obligations to heal and revive patients, or to conduct evaluations and administer treatment.
Their primary purpose is to provide management oversight over the running of the department, supporting the Directors to achieve the best service for Foundation personnel. Achieving this provides a lot of scope to their remit and requires authority, ingenuity, and creativity.
Management of Medical Staff:
A Consultant is expected to support staff in their development whether it is training them when they initially join the department or reviewing them as they progress, being available to answer any questions or correct any improper actions or behaviour. This also includes issuing medical licenses and conducting testing for combat medics.
At times, they will be confronted by malpractice from junior staff, requiring that they take corrective or disciplinary action. Furthermore, may be asked to represent the department in enquiries led by ISD or tribunals.
It is necessary that a consultant leads by example and rewards good behaviour and work.
Encouraging Diverse Roleplay:
Although many duties of the department can be enacted by mid-level staff, consultants should actively prompt and promote the more unique elements of the role. This includes starting blood drives, vitamin checks, surgery, or chemical production. It leads by example, showing newer staff what can be done and keeps other staff engaged.
Fostering Department Relations:
Being part of medical leadership will often mean more engagement with other site stakeholders. A consultant should always strive to build and support relationships in the best interests of the department and facility.
Review & Implementation of Policy & Procedures:
Although not necessarily in a direct position to implement, change, or remove any policy, consultants should listen to feedback from staff as well as consider their own ideas regarding the improvement of the department. They should actively seek to work with the Directors to put forward any ideas they have and lead any implementation when required.
Of course, there are the standard site-wide clearance level 4 duties as well.
Please give some lore about your Medical Consultant character and what storylines they would be involved in:
Even from a young age, Damond was completely enthralled by the complexities of human behaviour and the power of empathy. His father, a psychologist often spoke to him about his work, encouraging open conversation. Growing up, Damond found solace in literature and psychology. His interest and support from his father led to him devouring books that explored the depths of the human psyche.
When Damond became a teenager, his closest friend took his own life as the result of bullying. He entered a deep grieving, speaking to his father regularly but their relationship became strained. Suffering self-inflicted wounds and severe mental distress, Damond agreed to go to Oakwood, a rehabilitation facility in South England.
During his time at Oakwood, he received treatment from dedicated professionals who appreciated his fascination with their work. Despite of his own grief, Damond became deeply infatuated by the field of mental health even further, especially therapeutic intervention after it was explained to him that his pushback from their support was not going to stop them from helping him. Rapidly, Damond’s intense curiosity and interest in the treatment he received resulted in a transformative distraction from his own pain.
In two years, Damond was released at the age of 15. He had decided that his life would be dedicated to the understanding of human connection and mind. He engaged in first aid training at school and later studied biology and psychology at a local college. Damond made his way into Warwickshire University with spectacular grades and continued his studies.
Emerging from university, Damond was elated with his commitment as it has earned him a Doctorate of Psychosomatic Medicine after he conducted numerous studies to unravel the relationship of psychological states and physical health, many of which he publicised.
Damond's ground-breaking work caught the attention of the SCP Foundation. Recognizing his expertise in the field of psychosomatic medicine and his unique perspective on the intricate connections between mind and body, the SCP Foundation recruited Damond to join their ranks. His understanding of the human mind and his ability to navigate complex psychological landscapes have proven invaluable in dealing with
Dr Damond's ground-breaking work caught the attention of the SCP Foundation. Identifying his expertise in the field of psychosomatic medicine they realised the benefit his unique perspective would have due to the anomalous phenomena at the site that directly impact the staff and D-Class’s mental and emotional well-being.
